Air Temperature Sensor

Intake Air Temperature sensor monitors the temperature of the air entering the engine, which helps the engine’s computer (PCM) maintain the balance of air/fuel mixture for optimal engine performance.

The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is a critical component in modern internal combustion engines. It measures the temperature of the air entering the engine's intake manifold and sends this information to the Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The ECU uses this data to adjust the air-fuel mixture for optimal combustion, ensuring better performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions control.

Key Functions of the IAT Sensor:

  • Air Density Calculation : Cold air is denser than warm air, so the ECU uses the IAT sensor data to calculate the air density and adjust the fuel injection accordingly.
  • Fuel Mixture Adjustment : The ECU ensures the correct air-fuel ratio by compensating for temperature changes.
  • Ignition Timing : The IAT sensor data can also influence ignition timing to prevent knocking or pre-ignition.
  • Emissions Control : Proper air-fuel mixture and combustion reduce harmful emissions.

Location of the IAT Sensor:

  • The IAT sensor is typically located in the air intake system , either integrated into the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or mounted separately in the intake manifold or air filter housing.

Symptoms of a Faulty IAT Sensor:

  • Poor fuel economy
  • Rough idling or stalling
  • Engine hesitation or misfires
  • Check Engine Light (CEL) illuminated
  • Failed emissions test

Testing the IAT Sensor:

  • Visual Inspection : Check for damaged wiring or corrosion.
  • Resistance Test : Use a multimeter to measure the sensor's resistance at different temperatures (compare with manufacturer specifications).
  • Voltage Test : Check the sensor's output voltage with the key in the "ON" position (refer to the vehicle's service manual for expected values).

Replacement:

  • If the IAT sensor is faulty, it should be replaced. Ensure the replacement part matches the manufacturer's specifications. After replacement, clear any error codes and test the vehicle to ensure proper operation.
