ABOUT YOUR VEHICLE’S ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SENSOR
What does an oil pressure switch do?
The oil pressure switch is installed in the oil circuit of the engine. It monitors the oil pressure and turns off or on a warning light or controls an oil pressure indicator.
Where are these sensors located?
An oil pressure sensor (switch) is usually installed in the cylinder block close to an oil filter or at the oil filter housing.
Will a malfunctioning oil pressure switch illuminate the warning light or affect vehicle operation?
The oil pressure switch is normally closed. When the ignition is switched on, the oil pressure warning light illuminates. When oil pressure is built up as the engine starts, the switch contact in the oil pressure switch opens and the ground contact for the warning light is interrupted. The warning light goes out.
What are the common causes of failure?
Typically these sensors fail due to a Clogged inlet bore, Contact failure on the connector, Internal short-circuits, Damaged measuring element, Loss of sealing
How to determine if these sensors are malfunctioning?
The best way to test if your sensor is bad is through the lights on the oil pressure gauge. If the low oil pressure warning light comes on when the engine’s oil levels are normal and your engine is running smoothly and quietly, then you likely have a bad oil pressure sensor.
