An oxygen sensor is generally mounted in the exhaust stream of vehicles to measure the oxygen content of the exhaust gases. The sensor will compare the oxygen content to the oxygen proportion in the air and passes that information back to the vehicle’s  Engine Control Module(ECU). to allow the adjustment of the air-fuel ratio so that a car’s engine can work at its optimal fuel efficiency level.

ABOUT YOUR VEHICLE’S OXYGEN O2 SENSOR

What does an Oxygen Sensor do?
The oxygen sensor is an electronic device used to measure the amount of oxygen in a gas or liquid.  It is most commonly used to measure the concentration of oxygen in exhaust gasses, to allow the adjustment of the air-fuel ratio so that a car’s engine can work at its optimal fuel efficiency level.

Where is the Oxygen Sensor located?
Most newer vehicles have more than one sensor, on the exhaust pipe, close to the engine, and another close to the muffler and catalytic converter.  Having two O2 sensors means that the vehicle has two readings provided to the engine computer so that the vehicle can fine-tune its performance.

What happens when the sensor malfunctioning?
The only way to know for certain if your sensor is malfunctioning is by using a diagnostic code reader.  There are some items that often point to this issue, such as:
Fuel usage increases without a change in driving habits, Reduction in car performance, the Engine runs rough which doesn’t improve after replacing spark plugs,
The engine light on the dashboard notifies the driver of an issue found by the engine computer.

What are the common causes of failure?
Some of the reasons sensors fail include:
Fuel that is contaminated
Carbon deposits on the sensor from an engine that has started to burn oil
The sensor has reached its end of life

How to determine if the Oxygen Sensor is malfunctioning?
Signs of a failing oxygen sensor:
1. Check Engine Light Is On
2. Increased exhaust emissions
3. Bad performance
